As you look for mourning geckos to start your colony, try to purchase from a local keeper/breeder if possible. Usually people with an established mourning gecko colony are up to their ears in geckos unless they’re using them as feeders, and will more than happy to let you have two or three. Make sure the geckos are alert, energetic, and have been eating well. Asking the breeder what type of gecko diet and insects they are used to will also help the transition. If possible, purchase your starter geckos from the same colony; this will reduce the infighting that determines pecking order and reduce the risk of injuries.
